I might as well post this here also.
Today it's fair (37F) which isn't bad for November. This afternoon we have a forecast for rain and snow and windy. I'm glad that I'm in for the day.
Today in history: In 1783 George Washington bade farewell to his officers at Franuces Tavern in New York City; 1816: James Monroe was elected the 5th president of the US; 1942: US bombers attacked the Italian mainland for the first time; 1978: San Francisco got its first female mayor as City Supervisor (now US Senator) Dianne Feinstein was named to replace the assassinated George Moscone.
Am I the only one who gets tired of these almost daily updates on the economy? One day it's good the next not-so-good, up and down goes the stock market. In the meantime, everything keeps going along at the same miserable pace for large segments of the population no matter what the statistics say.
Suicide attackers kill 36 at a Pakistan mosque. Somehow this doesn't sound right to me. Muslims attacking a mosque. How do they justify killing people who are worshipping the same god that they do? Don't they have that belief that if you are killed under such circumstances, you find immediate reward in heaven? So are they sending their "enemies" to Islamic heaven? Strange.
I understand that the Obama administration is trying to claim executive privilege for a staff member, the social secretary involved in the gatecrasher investigation by Congress. In the first place, what a stupid thing to do and secondly, isn't this the president that promised "transparency" during his election campaign? Are there any people of common sense working on the president's staff? Stonewalling a congressional investigation of what went wrong with the president's security? over someone as insignificant as the social secretary?
Have a great day everyone--remember TGIF.

:Dgood afternoon my friends from Tuxy and me.
8-)Today it's overcast (29F) with a 50% chance of snow flurries in the afternoon. Unfortunately, today the weather map looks like it might be more than flurries. There's a real white & pink mess headed our way from the west. Oh happy day NOT.
:)Today in history: 1941 this was the day that would "live in infamy"--Imperial Japan pulled a surprise raid on the US, attacking the military installations on Pearl Harbor. It was the beginning of World War II for the US. Other events: 1787: Delaware became the first state to ratify the US Constitution; 1796: the electoral college chose John Adams as the 2nd US President; 1972: the last US moon mission, Apollo 17, blasted off from Cape Canaveral; 1988: a major earthquake in the Soviet Union devastated northern Armenia killing as many as 25,000.
>:(Thousands protest in Iran shouting "death to the dictator" and clashing with security forces and militiamen who beat them with batons and firing tear gas. It was a day of nationwide student demonstrations. Banners and signs with slogans from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on the tall University of Teheran fence hid whatever took place inside. Cell phone networks around the universities were shut down. Police and the Revolution Guard surrounded all the university entrances and were checking IDs entering to prevent opposition activists from joining the students. So more protests and I imagine arrest so we can expect more fake trials with forced confessions of wrongdoing. I wish there was something we could do to help, but our best policy is hands off. There's nothing like a common foe to unite fighting families.
;)We've come a long way, baby!! Diane Sawyer is on her last week after 10 years as co-anchor of ABC's Good Morning America, before replacing Charles Gibson on the network's nightly World News. And that will bean that 2 of the 3 networks will have women anchors. He's retiring as of 18 December and she will start 21 December.
::)The biggest climate talk in history opened today in Copenhagen, Denmark, with a stark UN warning of the risk of the risk of desertification and rising seas. Host Denmark feels assured that a deal to combat climate change was "within reach." I don't think that there is any way to deny that climate change is occurring. The loss of ice in the Arctic and Antarctic is unmistakeable. The only difference of opinion is what is causing it. Is it a naturally recurring cycle or is man's carbon emissions causing it. I don't have the answer. My guess would be that it is both--a natural phenomenon aggravated by man. Converting to a green economy can't hurt and if the US would put in the effort, we could wind up leading the world in the technology required, more than compensating for loss of jobs in other areas like the automobile industry.
;DHave a great Monday everybody.

good morning/afternoon my friends from Tuxy and me.
Today it's cloudy (31F) with a 50% chance of snow flurries this morning. But tonight, watch out. Becoming windy with scattered snow showers and a steadier snow developing late. Low around 30F. ESE winds at 10 to 20 mph, increasing to 20 to 30 mph. Chance of snow 90%. 1 to 3 inches of snow expected. Well, at least it's only a couple of inches of snow being blown all around. <sigh>
Today in history: In 1776, Washington and his troops crossed the Delaware river from New Jersey into Pennsylvania; 1854, Pope Pius IX proclaimed the Catholic dogma of the Immaculate Conception (and you thought it was a major part of the church for centuries, didn't you); 1886: the AFL (American Federation of Labor) was organized in Columbus, Ohio; 1949: the Chinese Nationalists moved from the mainland to Formosa/Taiwan;1987 Pres. Reagan and Soviet Premiere Gorbachev signed a treaty calling for destruction of intermediate-range nuclear missiles; 1993: Pres. Clinton signed NAFTA into law
Today is one of the days "the music died"--John Lennon was shot to death outside his New York City apartment building by mark David Chapman.
More bombing in Iraq. Three bomb-rigged cars exploded in quick succession striking the Labor Ministry, a court complex and the new site of Iraq's Finance Ministry (its previous building was destroyed in an August blast). Officials say the coordinated series killed at least 118 and wound 361. I wonder if he Iraqi people almost would rather Saddam was still in charge?
Afghan President Karzai said that it will be at least 15 years before his government can bankroll a security force strong enough to protect the country from the threat of insurgency. 15 years??? And we're going to start withdrawing troops in 18 months? Yeah, right. So does he expect us to prop up his corrupt government for the next 15 years, pouring millions of dollars into his pockets and those of his friends?
Did anyone watch the Monday Night Football game? I couldn't believe it. 9 pass interference penalties and some of the most blatant examples I've ever seen. It was incredible and the two teams tied for 2nd in total penalty minutes--310. Towards the end of the game I was pulling for them to break the record, cheering when another penalty was called.
Have a great Tuesday everyone.

:)good afternoon my friends from Tuxy and me. :-[No daily bulletin today. I accidentally erased it before posting and I'm not going to try and redo it. :oGood luck to all my friends in the Midwest, especially Hawkeye in Iowa. I was watching the Weather Channel person telecasting from Des Moines and he could barely keep his feet with the strong gusting winds. And at times you couldn't see the parking lot he was standing in due to whiteout. I am so not ready for this kind of weather and luckily it seems that it is supposed to be going north of me. But I guess it would be hard to persuade those in Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa that winter isn't coming this year. 8-)Today here in the Finger Lakes region of New York it's overcast (39F) windy (20-30 mph) with a 90% chance of rain turning to a mix of rain and snow this evening then snow after midnight (1-3 in.). :-XToday in history: In 1608, English Puritan poet John Milton was born; 1941: China declared war on Japan, Germany and Italy; 1987: the first Palestinian intefadeh (uprising) began as riots broke out in Gaza and spread to the West Bank triggering a strong Israel reaction; 1992: Prince Charles and Princess Diana announce their separation. Thought for today: "All sins are attempts to fill voids." --Simone Weil, French philosopher (1909-43). ::)Have a fine Wednesday everyone.

;Dgood afternoon my friends from Tuxy and me.
8-)Today it's cloudy (29F) with a 50% chance of snow (1 in) and winds 20-30 mph gusting to 40 mph. Tonight occasional snow with a low of 18F. Lake effect snow warnings in effect all day.
???Today in history: In 1520, Martin Luther publicly burned the papal edict demanding that he recant or face excommunication; 1869 women were granted the right to vote in Wyoming Territory; 1884: Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was published in Canada and England (not in the US until 1885); 1906: Pres. Theodore Roosevelt became the first American to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for helping mediate an end to the Russo-Japanese War; 1931: Jane Addams became the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (co-recipient Nicholas Murray Butler); 1948: UN General Assembly adopted its Universal Declaration on Human Rights; 1950 Ralph Bunch became the first black American to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize;
:-XA bipartisan group of lawmakers hopes to finally win a long struggle to ease curbs against importing low-cost prescription drugs but will have to overcome Obama administration and Big Pharma to do so. Is this part of the bargain struck with Big Pharma -- no low-cost drugs from outside the US? Probably. As someone who just had to wait a week before refilling a prescription because of the cost, I'm am once again appalled at such a simple thing that could bring financial relief to many. But god forbid Big Pharma loses some money.
:-/The US House of Representatives will debate the most sweeping changes to financial regulation since the Great Depression, including broad new government powers over large banks and tighter regulation of capital markets. For the first time the over-the-counter derivatives market would be regulated, including credit default swaps at the root of AIG's problems. The insurance industry would be monitored by a federal office and hedge funds would be forced to register with federal regulators. Of course, the Republicans are crying "Socialism" once again. But as far as I'm concerned they have nothing to say. It is their policies that brought us this mess. So shut up and let the Democrats try to fix it.
::)Pres. Obama in his Nobel Peace Prize speech said there would be no 'precipitous drawdown' of US Afghan forces and cautioned that US troops could still be there for years to come. In 2011 we will begin to transfer responsibility to the Afghan people. He said the pace of the transfer of authority and "the slope of the drawdown" of troops would depend on circumstances. Hedging already, isn't he? Meanwhile in Iraq, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates told Iraqi leaders that plans to reduce troop levels sharply by next summer were on track despite delayed elections and a major al-Qaeda attack. The president has pledged to end combat operation by 31 Aug 2010 and a full pullout by the end of 2011. I certainly hope this continues. If Iraq isn't ready to rule itself by then, when will it and is it really any of our business?
:)Have a terrific Thusday everyone.

:)USAMom, Nice to hear from you. Aren't you glad you there in sunny and warm San Diego? I'm sitting here in cold (29F) and windy show flurrying New York. Although we seem to have missed the mess that hit the Midwest. Thank goodness. ;DHi Capt. With all the trouble I've been having lately with MSN, this is a nice oasis.
